Eric Reiger AKA Hottea, Artist

The two words hot and tea or more specifically the phrase "HOT TEA" was chosen to highlight the relationship between the two words. We so often over look the meaning behind what we say and how special some of these words and phrases really are. These two words compliment each other both physically and grammatically. Without one or the other you wouldn't have a phrase that evokes a sense of comfort, warmth and relaxation. In a physical sense without hot water all you have is tea, and without tea all you have is water, but when both put together you have "HOT TEA". Hot tea is greater than the sum of its parts. This idea was the basis for the HOT TEA project. There will always be a relationship between things and that interconnection we have with everything around us is the backbone for how HOT TEA navigates. The project is a comment on all relationships good and bad and the things that lie between them. Like the phrase itself Hot and Tea are two totally different words brought together to represent something new, which reflect on the media and surfaces that the project makes use of.

What are recent inspirations for your creativity?

Honestly, the challenge of installing non-destructively in a public space will always serve as my main inspiration and goal. Bicycling through the city and seeing all these vacant spaces is bittersweet. It once stood for something. It had a purpose. I aim to give it back it's purpose but with a touch of color.

What are projects you’re working on that excite you?

I have my first major solo show here in Minneapolis. I want to inspire people here to do their own work with consistency. We have a lot of artists here. This is our city and we need to make it what we want. The ones who have the most money shouldn't be the only one to shape the urban landscape.

How do you stay motivated to accomplish so much?

My family. I love them with all of my heart. Most of my work is inspired by them. They are a constant motivation to be successful. My family has always been there for me in times of need and I want to make them proud.

What city do you recommend exploring? Why?

I recommend the wilderness. We are so caught up in living life so busily in the city. I truly believe we need to re-connect with our surroundings before it's too late. Leave instagram, facebook, and twitter at home. Lets spend more time getting to know the people around us and the wonderful surroundings we sometimes take for granted.

Where and what are you doing when you’re drinking Hiya?

Various places but always thinking of the ones I love.
